Sinn Féin’s Cllr Jonathan O’Brien has reiterated a demand
that the new Cork hospital to replace the Mercy be located on the
city’s Northside. He was speaking after Minister for Health and
Children, Mary Harney, failed to satisfactorily address a question put
to her on the issue by Martin Ferris TD.
At the request of Sinn Fein Cllrs Jonathan O’Brien and Annette
Spillane, Deputy Ferris asked the Minister to guarantee the new
hospital would be located on the Northside. The Minister responded that
this was a matter for the Health Service Executive, which her
department had requested to issue a report directly to the Deputy.
Commenting, Cllr O’Brien stated: “There are over 100,000 people on
Cork’s Northside who have been without a general hospital locally since
the closure of the North Infirmary. Sinn Féin has been campaigning on
this issue for some time. There is now an opportunity to resolve it
with the building of a new hospital in Cork. The Minister has overall
political responsibility and must act to ensure the hospital is located
in the Northside.”
